Three and a half hours from marina to muffin
Your trip begins on the shore at Bleik Marina, where the skipper and the guide meet you at the Green Gold of Norway sign and hand out warm flotation suits and life jackets. Once everyone is zipped in, the RIB heads out from the little harbour, past the white beach and towards open water.

Out over the Bleik Canyon the boat slows and the search begins. The guide explains every animal you meet, from whales to seabirds, and takes photos for you to keep after the trip. The listing names sperm whales first, with pilot whales, orcas, minke whales and, on some days, Risso's dolphins and fin whales.
Back on land, the suits come off over a cup of tea or coffee and a muffin, all inside the 3.5 hours the trip takes. It is a short outing by the standards of Norwegian whale watching, and that is part of its appeal: you are out at sea within minutes of leaving the beach, not after hours on a bus.
Why this trip
A small speedboat.
A canyon offshore.

By the way · why bleik
Deep ocean almost on the doorstep
Bleik is a fishing village on the north-west side of Andøya, and about 20 km to the northwest lies Bleiksdjupet, the deepest submarine canyon in Europe. At its inner end the Norwegian continental shelf is narrower than anywhere else on the coast and drops to more than 1,000 m.

That deep water is where sperm whales hunt squid, and Store norske leksikon names the area off Andøya as the centre of whale safari tourism in Northern Norway because the ride out to the feeding whales is so short. The whales here are mature males that travel north from warmer seas.
Visit Vesterålen describes the sperm whale as a permanent resident of Bleiksdjupet. For Andenes whale watching and for the boats from Bleik alike, that is what makes this coast different: the largest toothed whale on Earth feeds within easy reach of a small boat.

A wonderful trip with an excellent guide and a very experienced captain. We saw sperm whales, a big group of pilot whales, a minke whale and huge numbers of puffins.”

A cloudy start turned into a beautiful day at sea. Our guide and skipper kept following the whales patiently, we watched several sperm whales together and then masses of puffins.”

Good value. The marine biologist guide and the skipper knew their stuff and cared about our safety. We met orcas, sea eagles, a seal and plenty of puffins, and the RIB ride alone was worth it.”

Sun and calm wind took us far out. The warm suits, goggles and gloves were essential at that speed. No sperm whales for us, but a large pod of pilot whales stayed with us for a long while.”

Amazing outing: orcas, puffins, eagles and seals. I liked that the guide and the driver behaved responsibly around the animals and asked others to do the same.”

A lovely evening trip in good weather. Our guide was knowledgeable and clearly loves marine life. We saw a sperm whale, a minke whale and some dolphins, and stopped by the puffin island too.”

What guests write after their trip
Read through the reviews and the crew comes up again and again. Guests praise the guide's knowledge of marine wildlife, and several name a marine biologist on board who explained what they were seeing. They also mention a skipper who handled the boat with skill and kept everyone safe.

Respect for the animals is another common thread. Reviewers describe a crew that followed the whales patiently but never crowded them, and one guest noted that the team even encouraged other boats to behave responsibly. Sightings in the reviews range from sperm whales and pilot whales to orcas, minke whales, seals, sea eagles and puffins.
The small touches stand out too: warm suits, goggles and gloves against the wind, and coffee with a muffin at the end. Guests also enjoyed the ride itself, saying the speedboat is fun even before any whale appears and that the seated position gives a clear view for photos.

A summer trip under the midnight sun
This is a summer trip: the listing describes it as summer whale watching, in a place where the sun never sets, and its booking calendar shows the exact dates. Visit Vesterålen gives May to September as the season for whale safaris from Andenes and Stø.

The light is the bonus. At the Andøya weather station the sun stays up through mid-June and mid-July, and Visit Vesterålen says constant daylight lasts about 2 months in the region. With departures listed at 10:00 and 21:00, an evening trip can mean whales in full daylight close to midnight.
It is also mild rather than hot. July is the warmest month at the Andøya station, with an average high of 14 °C, and June brings the least rain of the year, 53 mm. On the open sea it always feels cooler, which is why the warm suit is part of the trip.

When the sea decides the route
Bleik faces the open Norwegian Sea, and a small boat needs a reasonable sea to cross out to the canyon. On a windy day a skipper may decide that the deep water is out of reach and keep closer to the coast, or move the trip to another date.
Plan around that rather than against it. If you have a few days on Andøya, book an early date so there is room to try again. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the trip lets you hold a place without risk while you watch the forecast.
Rain matters less than wind. Even in summer the Andøya station logs wet days: July averages 7 of them reaching 2.5 mm or more. In a flotation suit a shower is a minor detail; a big swell is what changes the plan.

Getting the tail shot
The picture everyone wants is the sperm whale's tail. Just before a deep dive the whale arches its back and lifts its flukes clear of the water, and then it is gone for a long time. Feeding dives average about 600 metres and often last around 45 minutes.

That rhythm gives you time to prepare. Between dives the whale rests at the surface to breathe, and the guide will tell you when it is likely to go down. Set a fast shutter speed, use burst mode, and keep your gloves thin enough to work the camera.
You do not have to spend the whole trip behind a lens. The guide on the Bleik boat takes photos for guests to take home, so you can also simply watch. For puffins, a long lens helps: they are small, fast and best caught as they fly low over the water.
Under the surface
A sperm whale's feeding dive often lasts around 45 minutes.
These dives average about 600 metres deep, and between them the whale rests at the surface to breathe, which is when the boat gets its view and you get your tail shot.
By the way · what to wear
A warm suit on top, your own layers underneath
The trip provides the outer layer: a warm flotation suit and a life jacket for every guest. Underneath, you bring the warmth. The listing asks for warm clothing, outdoor clothing and a change of clothes for afterwards.

Dress as for a cold, windy autumn walk, even in July. A base layer of wool or synthetic fabric, a fleece and warm trousers work well, with a hat, gloves and a scarf for the parts the suit leaves bare. Sunglasses help in the bright summer light on the water.
Seasickness is worth thinking about before you board. Eat a light meal, take any remedy in advance if you are prone to it, and keep your eyes on the horizon. All guests should be in reasonable physical shape, as the listing notes, because a RIB at speed is a bumpy ride.

By the way · the bird island
Bleiksøya and its puffins
West of the village rises Bleiksøya, a steep bird cliff that is protected as a nature reserve together with nearby islets and skerries. Going ashore is banned from 15 April to 31 July, so the birds are seen from the water or the beach.

Puffins are the stars. Visit Vesterålen says puffin safaris run at Bleik from May to August and that the birds leave around 20 August. The whale trip names puffins among the birds you are likely to meet, alongside eagles and gannets.
The colony is smaller than it once was. The official 2013 count put it at 11,000 pairs, 85 percent below earlier counts, and the puffin is red-listed as Endangered in Norway. Seeing them from a boat that keeps its distance is the best way to enjoy them.

A white beach and a road along the ocean
Bleik takes its name from the white sand of Bleikstranda, the beach just north of the village, and Visit Vesterålen says it stretches over 2.5 km. It is the place to walk before or after the trip, with the bird island always in view.

The village lies on Nasjonal turistveg Andøya, a 58-kilometre scenic route that runs along the outer coast past Nordmela and Bleik to Andenes. Andenes, at the northern tip of the island, has the airport about one kilometre from town and the harbour for the bigger whale boats.
If you prefer a larger vessel, Andenes whale watching boats leave from that harbour, including a classic catamaran with a heated indoor cabin. The guides on this site compare them with the speedboat from Bleik, so you can choose the trip that suits you.

Whales are wild animals, and no trip can promise them. The listing's own wording is high chances to see whales, puffins and more wildlife, which is a description of the odds, not a guarantee. Sea conditions can also keep the boat closer to shore on some days.
If that sounds like you, it is a fine way to spend a summer day on Andøya: a small group, an expert guide, a short ride to deep water and puffins along the way. If you need a warm cabin, a lower age limit or a free rebooking when no whales show, look at the catamaran from Andenes instead.
